This feature is available on Enterprise plans.

Segments let you target specific groups within your audience and send content tailored to their interests. They're a powerful way to ensure the right people receive the most relevant content in your newsletters, increasing engagement and relevance.

What segments do

Where lists are static groups you build manually, segments are categorizations you apply to your contacts so you can:

  • Send different content to different groups within the same newsletter
  • Schedule content (articles, images, text) for specific segments only
  • Target sources at the segment level
  • Preview your newsletter as it will appear for each segment
  • Filter analytics by segment to see how each group is engaging

How to import segments via CSV

To assign contacts to segments, prepare a CSV file with the following columns:

The segment_code column is what assigns each contact to a segment.

During the contact upload process, you'll map the segment_code column to the corresponding segment codes in your account.

Make sure your segment codes either:

  • Match an existing segment already in your dashboard, or
  • Are created as new segments before you upload

Segment code definitions

Two special codes to know:

  • All — everyone in your subscriber list
  • No Code — any subscriber who hasn't been assigned to a segment

Using segments

Once your contacts are segmented, you can use those segments in several places:

Scheduled content

When you schedule an article, image, or text block (in Content → Scheduled → Articles / Images / Text), you'll see a dropdown to select the segments the content should appear for. This lets you target specific groups with tailored messages.

Source-level segmentation

You can apply segments directly at the source level. This sends content from that source only to subscribers in the selected segment(s) — useful when a source is relevant to part of your audience but not all of it.

Segmented preview

Before a newsletter sends, you can preview how it will appear for each segment. This is the fastest way to confirm that the right message is going to the right group.

Filtered analytics

In Analytics, use segment filters to see how different groups are engaging with your content. Use this to refine your strategy based on what each segment responds to.

Pro tip: don't over-segment

While segmentation is useful, be mindful not to over-segment your newsletter. Too many small segments can limit the effectiveness of the AI personalization engine, which works best when it has enough signal across a meaningfully sized audience.
